About HDTV
High Definition TeleVision (HDTV) is the best television available.
Not only does it involve a digital signal, it is also recorded and broadcasted in high resolution. Furthermore, pictures have a widescreen format (16:9) and are accompanied by cinema quality sound (Dolby® Digital 5.1 surround).
Superior resolution
HDTV pictures show almost 5 times more detail than current PAL television pictures. The leap forward can perhaps best be compared to what we have experienced in recent years with computer screens. Do you remember your old VGA or 640 x 480 screen? Well, compare that to the currently most used 1024 x 768 or maybe you are already on 1280 x 1024. And be aware, this is an even smaller step forward than HDTV now offers!
The higher resolution offers much more sharpness and detail. In HDTV, pictures are tremendously more realistic than with the television we are used to.
Digital
It makes perfect sense that the signal is digital. Traditional noise interference and spikes belong to the past. This too adds to the
improved picture quality. Furthermore, if the screen contains the proper connectors, the signal can be digitally fed from the set-top-box into the receiver. This also eliminates any loss of quality due to digital analog-digital conversion.
Surround sound
HDTV does not only provide the best picture quality, it also offers 5.1 Dolby® Digital surround sound, like on DVD or in the cinema.
Experiencing television like this has never been possible before. Dolby is a registered trademark of Dolby Laboratories.
Screens
The HDTV signal is used at its best when shown on a high resolution screen (1080i x 1920 or 720p x 1280) with digital signal input.
Showing the HDTV picture on a standard PAL screen only has limited benefits. High resolution screens are available from several A-brands, although offers in maximal resolution are still limited. Especially with the larger screens that are currently being sold more and more, a higher resolution than PAL is required to fully appreciate the larger picture.
Reception through an HDTV set-top-box
The HDTV signal contains much more information than the current standard television signal. This requires a new reception unit, able to deal with the amount and speed of the data. This concerns both satellite and cable signals. Improvements in technology will eventually lead to hardware integration, but for the time being we have to deal with separate components. There are different types of set-top-boxes for cable and satellite reception and for free or conditional access.
HDTV programs
Euro1080 is the first channel offering HDTV in Europe. Euro1080 is part of the successful Belgian company Alfacam and was started
several years ago especially for HDTV. On January 1st 2004, Euro1080 started broadcasting via the ASTRA satellite. The programs
on offer contain a.o. events, sports, music, shows and cultural events.
Euro1080 transmits on 2 channels: a Main Channel intended for individual users and small groups (bars, hotels, restaurants). The other channel is the Event Channel and is used in cinemas, cultural centre, sports centre, theatres etc.
This years programs of the Event Channel will include not only many concerts but also the European Soccer Championships and the Olympic games in Athens.
The Euro1080 signal can momentarily be received unencoded for demonstration purposes via the ASTRA satellite. Starting in May, new programs will be encoded, with free to air signals shown in between encoded programs. Decoding the encoded signal requires a Euro1080 Conditional Access card.
